Morwell is best known as the centre of the state's brown coal mining and electricity production industry. The Morwell Centennial Rose Garden is one of the finest in the southern hemisphere with some 3,000 bushes, including more than 250 varieties in 100 beds, planted in a two and a half acre garden. Morwell is also home to one of the regions major cultural facilities, the Latrobe Regional Gallery.

Just 16 kilometres south, in the foothills of the Strzelecki ranges, the Morwell National Park attracts nature lovers and provides a vast habitat for native flora and fauna. The park features beautiful fern gullies and 43 species of native orchid. It is ideal place for a picnic lunch and a stroll along one of the many walking tracks. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of water activities at Hazelwood Pondage with warm water all year round .
